The Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) and the Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology (GMI) were both founded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). The aim of GMI is to provide excellence in plant molecular biology – therefore it is the only international center for basic plant research in Austria and one of the very few throughout the world. IMBA - Institute of Molecular Biotechnology is one of the leading biomedical research institutes in Europe focusing on cutting-edge functional genomics and stem cell technologies. Both institutes are located at the Vienna BioCenter, a dynamic cluster of research institutes, universities, and biotech companies. The working language is English. Our multilingual team of the IMBA/GMI Communications & Partnership Department is looking for a creative Event Manager who plans and organises events that enthuse distinct groups of society for science.

Science Communicator (m/w/d)

The successful candidate knows how to design impactful activities that communicate the research fields of IMBA and GMI to a broad audience of stakeholders – ranging from primary school children to representatives of relevant industries and the interested public. You encourage scientists to reach out to the interested public, effectively translate research for non-scientific audiences, ensure events are successful and cost-effective, and pay attention to budget and time constraints.

Your responsibilities:

  • Communicate the exciting research of IMBA and GMI to a range of audiences through engaging experiences, community outreach, school outreach, events and public engagement
  • Organize and manage events from start to finish according to requirements, target audience and objectives
  • Initiate new outreach & public engagement opportunities
  • Contribute innovative ideas for celebrating IMBA’s 20-year-anniversary & coordinate preparations
  • Coordinate in-house and external collaborators
  • Source and negotiate with vendors and suppliers
  • Prepare and monitor budgets and ensure adherence, using project management techniques
  • Evaluate the event’s success

Your profile:

  • University degree or equivalent work experience
  • 3 years of professional experience in event management & science communication
  • Excellent command of English and German
  • Strong team player with outstanding communication skills, especially in an international environment
  • Hands-on mentality and high degree of service orientation
  • Experience in content management, copyediting, and making the most out of graphics, photos and videos
  • Additional skills related to the broad scope of communications will be an asset

Our offer:

IMBA is an inclusive and equal opportunity employer. The institute provides a vibrant, exciting, and international work environment. We initially offer a 1-year, full-time (40hrs) contract with the possibility of extension with a competitive salary (minimum annual salary according to collective agreement € 30.176,02) and benefits appropriate for an international research organization.
